This film’s primary antagonist (voiced by Timothy Dalton) is reasonable, empathetic, and a sympathetic character. Everyone in this movie is decent and likable - the fairies, the animals, everyone. Still, I am horrified when I see a film like Rango promoting suicide and violence, with a scene where a kid stares down the barrel of a gun while holding the trigger and says, “I can see the bullet!” I also take notice when I see a movie like Secret of the Wings that keeps my interest despite a complete lack of violence, yelling, villainy, or otherwise mean-spirited behavior. I recently rented & watched The Expendables 2 (although I still haven’t figured out if I liked it). I cheered when Hermione broke Draco’s nose. I recognize that I am part of the problem. Friendship, family, problem solving, learning, teamwork, cooperation, prudence, temperance, justice … it seems the only virtue we don’t consider boring is courage. Violence, villains, child neglect, child abuse, bullies, horrible people being horrible, suicide attempts, violence as a heroic solution, monsters, terror, sexual innuendo, blatant advertisements… the typical kid’s film has more in common with a slasher movie than it does with what we pretend we want children to know. Liamfer provides a grown-up male perspective on Tinkerbell’s Secret of the Wings after the jump. It had a limited theatrical release in August 2012 and is currently available on Disney DVD and Netflix Instant. Secret of the Wings is the 4th film in Disney’s Tinkerbell series. Secret of the Wings is an erotic thriller starring Summer Glau and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. (Note from Marnifer: I did not review this film because I was out of town and this is how my husband chose to amuse himself in my absence.)
